Business of the Year

We want to recognise and celebrate businesses that are genuinely putting people and planet at heart of their business. Those who are leading the charge, showing that’s its possible. We want to showcase these businesses to inspire others to join in, to be the change in the world we want to see. To help create a better, more sustainable, more positive future.

So we’re introducing the; People & Planet Business of the Year Award

The award will be announced at our Gala dinner in November, where none other than Mary Portas will be out keynote speaker (and maybe award giver!)

By entering, you stand a chance of being one of three shortlisted businesses invited to attend the sold out Chamber Gala Dinner on November 14th and we’ll work with you to create a 1-minute video highlighting your achievements, which will be showcased on the big screen during the event and shared with our extensive online community across all our channels.

What do you need to be doing?

Have you significantly reduced your environmental impact through innovative practices?

Promoted biodiversity, or raised awareness on sustainability issues?

Or are you  promoting work-life balance, diversity, equity, and inclusion? 

Are you redefining corporate culture with mentorship and supportive policies for women and parents?

What do you win?

Three companies will be shortlisted and will be invited to the gala dinner on a table hosted by the award sponsor, Little Green Energy Company.   

3 shortlisted candidates will:

  • Receive two tickets to the Gala Dinner
  • Promoted on social media ahead of the event 
  • Announced shortlisting in Chamber enewsletter which goes to over 3500 subscribers
  • A 1-minute video will be filmed to share during the event, on social media and in enewsletter
  • Press release issued on shortlisted candidates ahead of gala dinner
  • Branding displayed on screens during gala dinner 
  • Feature shortlisted candidates in Chamber section of Connect Magazine
  • Featured on Chamber website 

The winning company will also be:  

  • Follow up feature on the Chamber website 
  • Invited to the stage to be presented with the award by Mary Portas 
  • Promoted in the local media post event 
  • Promoted on social media post event 
  • Invited to Sustainable Business Initiative group to share their best practice 

Criteria

People

  • Initiatives that promote work-life balance, flexible working arrangements, and family-friendly policies  

  • Promotes and is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion including recruitment, promotion and leadership 

  • Encourages and provides professional development of staff 

  • Positively active within their community. Advocating for Social Responsibility: adopting sustainable practices and contributing to their communities, engaging in initiatives that support social causes and foster positive change.
  • Positively changing traditional corporate culture, to be more people focussed by valuing relationships, community, and social responsibility.
  • Redefining Leadership: creating mentorship programs and leadership development initiatives that promote diverse leadership styles and voices.
  • Supporting Women and parents in the Workplace: implementing policies that promote work-life balance and create a supportive environment for women including flexible work arrangements, paid parental leave, mentorship and equal pay
  • Creating an Inclusive Environment: creating a workplace where everyone feels valued and included. This involves promoting diversity and combating discrimination. Implementing diversity training and creating safe spaces for employees to voice concerns and share ideas.

Planet

  • Delivered reductions in negative environmental impact within the workplace, business operations, product offering or supply chain (including energy, travel, water, waste, encroachments, GHG emissions, procurement)
  • Taken significant action to improve biodiversity or other nature based solutions  within the workplace, business operations, product offering or supply chain
  • Raised awareness or educated stakeholders and customers on environmental or sustainability issues
  • Delivered initiatives that promote circular economy practices
  • Sustainability related innovation prioritised in the design and delivery of new products and services

Meet the Finalists

The Process

It’s a very simple and there is no cost to apply. 

You can nominate your own business and tell your story and successes highlighting where you meet the criteria.  Awards are judged by an independent group who will be looking for businesses who are having genuine positive impact across a breadth of areas whose values, purpose, mission reflect commitment to people and planet and who are delivering on that. 

It’s a short application form with a section for you to explain in your own words with examples how you meet the criteria. 

Note: The chamber reserves the right to request two letters of reference from a third party.  

T&Cs

  • The nominee must be a member of the Chamber of Commerce
  • Nominee must have demonstrated one in each of People and Planet criteria
  • Shortlisted candidates consent to participating in filming for the creation of a promotional video
  • Shortlisted candidates consent to their logo being used in promotional activitie
  • Shortlisted candidates consent to providing a quote for media release and publication scheduled for 14th October
  • All applicants consent to submission being used as a case study on the Chamber website
