Chamber’s Sustainability Group held a hugely informative Lunch and Learn on hydrogen as a future fuel. Around 50 people enjoyed the presentation, which included a live link with host Sergey Kiselev, Head of Europe for ZeroAvia, a leading innovator in decarbonising commercial aviation and other sectors.
ZeroAvia aims to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable avaiation and is focussed on enabling zero emission 500-mile short haul trips by using existing propeller aircraft whose conventional engines would be replaced by ZeroAvia’s zero emission aviation powertrains. This makes the CI an excellent place to consider the advantages of switching to hydrogen aviation fuel to supply faster, safer and cleaner travel.
ZeriAvia is already working with some major airlines and Sergey talked about the the possibilities of hydrogen fuel-powered engines for Aurigny, the potential cost savings this would involve, the roadblocks to getting there, as well as the ecosystem that would be needed to support hydrogen aviation in Guernsey. Once this hydrogen ecosystem is in place, there would be possibilities for hydrogen automative and marine fuel. After his talk he remained online to answer questions.
The talk was introduced by Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, Lead on Digital, Skills and Entrepreneurship for the Committee for Economic Development (and co-founder of the Sustainable Business Initiative) who told the gathering that the speaker link was the result of a meeting she had with him at a Sustainability event in Paris a year ago. As one of the founders of Chamber’s Sustainability group, Deputy Kazantseva-Miller said she was delighted to open the session and that anything enabling a greener economy was close to her heart.
