Chamber President Barrie Baxter told the BBC today that the so-called end of the runway extension debate is misleading as it refers only to the shorter option within the existing boundary. ‘There is still a very valid case for investigating the merits of a 1700 extension which goes beyond the current area,’ he said.
Chamber and IoD have repeatedly called for a business case to be investigated regarding the merits of any runway extension. The business groups believe that the recent States debate was muddied by information which referred to any study costing some £700,000. The organisations think the cost of a study would be substantially less than that and would allow the island and its politicians to make a fully informed choice about this important transport issue
