Each month, we’re spotlighting one of our brilliant sponsors behind the Gala Dinner – this time it’s PWC, and Lead Office Partner, Roland Mills.

1. What should we know about you, and the company you work for?

With 700 people across the Channel Islands and a global network of over 370,000 in 149 countries, we bring the skills and deep sector expertise our clients need to work alongside them, helping their businesses transform, innovate and lead.

As the lead office partner, I usually kick off my day by catching up with the team or grabbing a coffee with industry contacts before diving into the day’s work. Since we’re a global firm with clients and network firms all over, I check emails that came in overnight and loop in the right specialists from the Channel Islands for any global matters. Then it’s on to client work with my team, which I really enjoy.

I’m a big believer in doing things that energise you, so I try to squeeze in some “me time” for exercise or learning, and I make it a point to be home for dinner with the family whenever I can.

2. What’s something most people don’t know about your company, but should?

We love to celebrate our multitude of cultures who work for the firm in the Channel Islands. This culminates in an annual in-office celebration where all the various cultures come dressed in their national/ traditional costumes to celebrate and bring food and drink for others to enjoy – it’s a festival-like atmosphere (beware the Nigerian Chilli Chicken!).

3. Why are you supporting this year’s Gala Dinner?

We’re excited to network with industry leaders, celebrate business excellence, and gain invaluable insights from an array of well-respected experts. As a firm, we’re very keen to play our part in supporting a vibrant and successful economy and society for the island. Particularly in our role as Carbon Balancing sponsor, this plays a part in our contribution to the environmental sustainability of Guernsey and its economy and we value the Chamber of Commerce’s foresight to balance the carbon impact of the event.

4. What’s your team most proud of right now?

We recently stepped into the next era for PwC, unveiling our new brand identity, including our new logo, which is a first global update in 15 years. At the heart of our new positioning is the idea that PwC helps clients build, sustain and accelerate momentum.

5. What kind of impact do you want to make through your work or in the community?

How we contribute to our island communities, in line with our firm’s purpose of building trust in society and solving important problems, is of great significance to us. As part of this, we use our convening power to bring together businesses, government, education, the third sector and our people to improve outcomes on the island in which we work.

6. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out in your industry?

Be curious and say yes to new opportunities, which can lead to unexpected growth. Even if you have a plan, be open to taking on new challenges, as they’ll prepare you for the future.

Never stop learning and don’t hesitate to ask questions if you don’t have all the answers.

7. What’s your go-to pick-me-up after a long day — coffee, music, fresh air, or something stronger?

To be honest I try to limit my ‘strong’ average intake during the week but revel in a few glasses of good red wine on the weekends.  My pick me up is generally hitting a few golf balls with my son, getting dinner ready (I am an avid cook) or simply spending some time with the family.
