Each month, we’re spotlighting one of our brilliant sponsors behind the Gala Dinner – this time it’s Butterfield.
1. What should we know about you, and the company you work for?
Butterfield is a relationship-led bank, which means we pride ourselves on offering a personalised approach for each of our customers, based on over 50 years of experience in the Channel Islands. Combining local expertise with global coverage, our friendly, on-island team delivers advice, products and services that both personal and corporate customers need to accomplish their financial goals.
2. What’s something most people don’t know about your company, but should?
Some people might think that we only offer business or high net worth banking – and while we do still provide corporate banking, asset management and trust services – we are excited to have recently expanded into high street banking in the Channel Islands.
Our offerings include a range of savings products, business and personal credit cards, residential mortgages and more. We’ve built our products specifically to meet islanders’ needs, based on our extensive local knowledge as well as more than 160 years of wider Group expertise.
3. Why are you supporting this year’s Gala Dinner?
At Butterfield, we’re always looking for opportunities to support good causes that are important to the islands we call home. We also make it a priority to support local businesses wherever we can, from our charitable endeavours to our credit cards rewards programme.
In particular, we’re keen to empower small and medium-sized business to attend this fantastic event, celebrate, network and to be able to hear the incredible keynote speaker, award-winning broadcaster, entrepreneur and podcast host, Steph McGovern.
4. What’s your team most proud of right now?
We have been thrilled to launch our credit cards to the local community and to have provided a new service where options, for many of us, had been dwindling. It represents the core of our goals over the coming years: listening to what islanders need and filling those gaps wherever we can.
This year also marked the launch of our Charitable Trust, making the first donations raised from our credit cards. We were so pleased to be able to give back more than £80,000 to local charities across the Channel Islands and are delighted to be making a positive impact alongside our customers.
5. What kind of impact do you want to make through your work or in the community?
Building relationships and wealth is about more than just the numbers. Supporting the long-term well-being of our clients, our employees and our community is an essential part of our overall mission.
Across Guernsey and Jersey, we align our resources and expertise to make a positive impact in our local communities, address complex societal issues and to help build a more inclusive, sustainable future for all.
6. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out in your industry?
As the finance industry has such a broad spectrum of career options, try out different departments or roles to see where your passions lie.
A graduate scheme or internship can be a great way to learn about all the different aspects of a business from the more traditional finance roles to the support and operational teams that are the engine room of the business. At Butterfield, we provide a range of career entry points and want to prepare students for future employment and empower the next generation of talent.
7. What’s your go-to pick-me-up after a long day — coffee, music, fresh air, or something stronger?
We are so lucky to live on such a beautiful island! So, we say: you can’t beat a walk in the fresh air or a dip in the sea – weather-depending, of course! From our location at Admiral Park, we are lucky to enjoy a fantastic east coast view and a stroll along the seafront on your way home can be a real tonic.
