Every month, we pose 7 questions to a Chamber member. This time it’s Interior Design studio, Gardiner Smith
1. Who are you & what do you do?
We’re Gardiner Smith Interior Design Studio, a boutique Interior design partnership based in Guernsey, founded by Sally Gardiner and Kate Smith. We create timeless, thoughtfully curated interiors that balance functionality with a strong sense of personality and place. From residential refurbishments to bespoke commercial spaces, our goal is always the same, to design environments that feel authentic, liveable and quietly elevated.

2. How long have you been doing this?

Sally Gardiner
Between us, we have over 30 years of combined experience in the world of interiors and design. Gardiner Smith Studio itself is a young, growing practice, but it’s built on a strong foundation of experience in both residential and hospitality design across Guernsey and beyond.
3. How did you get into this field?
Design has always been a natural calling for both of us, rooted in a love for architecture, craftsmanship. After years of collaborating on projects informally, we decided to combine our strengths and create Gardiner Smith Studio, bringing a shared vision of approachable yet refined design to life.
4. What’s the ‘why’ behind your work?
We believe good design can transform everyday living, it’s not just about beautiful things, but about creating spaces that support wellbeing, connection, and comfort. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a client feel truly at home in a space we’ve helped bring to life.
5. How do you approach problem-solving?
Every design challenge is an opportunity to be creative. We start by understanding the client’s needs and constraints , space, budget, or brief, and then work collaboratively to find smart, elegant solutions. Whether it’s reimagining a layout or sourcing locally made furnishings, we approach each problem with curiosity and care.
6. What book, mentor or podcast has shaped your thinking?
We’re both inspired by Ilse Crawford’s A Frame for Life, which beautifully captures the idea that interiors should be designed for real life, not just for show. We also love listening to The Great Indoors Podcast for its mix of design insight and humour, a reminder that interiors can be both deeply thoughtful and joyfully human.
4. Tea, coffee, or something stronger?
Always coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon, and when a project wraps successfully, perhaps something a little stronger to celebrate! (We’re partial to a well-made gin and tonic.)
