Every month we pose 7 questions to a Chamber member, this time it’s Scott Nelson, MD of Boatworks.

1. Who are you & what do you do?

I’m Scott Nelson, Managing Director and Boatyard Manager at Boatworks. I oversee our Chandlery, fuel stations, and boatyard. We specialize in high-quality repairs, maintenance, and bespoke vessel services. While I manage daily operations, ensuring smooth workflows and top-quality work, I remain hands-on – particularly with lathe and milling machine precision work.

This is a rare skill on the island and I take pride in executing precision work that is crucial for the success of our projects.

2. How long have you been doing this?

I entered the marine industry straight after school, training in welding and fabrication before earning a City & Guilds qualification in milling and turning. Over the past decade, my work has spanned engine installations, machining propeller shafts, and precision engineering.

I joined Boatworks in 2021, playing a key role in the growth of the boatyard and business. Throughout my career, attention to detail has been at the heart of everything I do.

3. How did you get into this field?

My love for boats and the sea runs deep in my family. I grew up with my parents, two brothers, and a sister down at Port Grat beach, where being around the water was simply part of our everyday life. This connection to the sea sparked my passion for boats early on and by the age of 12, I had my first boat.

As I spent more time on the water, my enthusiasm for the mechanics and craftsmanship involved in boating grew, shaping the direction of my career.

4. What’s the ‘why’ behind your work?

At Boatworks, my focus is on ensuring seamless operations and delivering exceptional service. I’m committed to upholding the highest standards in repairs and maintenance while leading a skilled team.

Beyond the boats, I take pride in supporting Guernsey’s maritime community, providing reliable marine services and products for both recreational and professional boaters—creating a trusted hub for all who rely on the sea.

5. What’s your approach for coming up with solutions?

My approach to solutions is driven by a deep understanding of customer needs, technical expertise, and industry experience. We start by listening, assessing each vessel’s challenges, and crafting practical, cost-effective solutions that uphold our high standards.

Whether it’s custom repairs or ongoing maintenance, our goal is simple—make life easier for our customers while ensuring the longevity of their boats.

6. What book has shaped your life and why?

If I am honest, I have never been big into reading, I could never sit still long enough. I always wanted to be making or fixing something. My spare time was spent outdoors fishing when I wasn’t fixing things.

7. Tea, Coffee or something a little stronger?

I’m a coffee person (preferably strong, with milk and 1 sugar).  It’s my go-to fuel for staying sharp throughout the day, especially when things are busy in the yard. Although I do enjoy pint of Guinness with the team when the week’s work is done!
