Every month we pose 7 questions to a Chamber member: this time it’s Dom Ogier-Keltie of Design by Domo
1. Who are you & what do you?
I’m Dom, Creative Director at Design by Domo. My passion is crafting immersive and inspiring worlds.
Your brand is people’s first impression of your business, it should inspire trust, narrate your story, and be distinctly yours. My mission is to create memorable visual identities that celebrate authenticity and individuality, with a specialization in event design – I really enjoyed creating the Gala Dinner branding for Chamber.
2. How long have you been doing what you do?
I’ve been in the graphic design field for 15 years, beginning my journey as an in-house designer at ‘Two Degrees North.’ I then led creative initiatives at ‘Guernsey Finance.’ In 2022, I took the plunge into freelancing and founded my studio. Over the past two years, I’ve collaborated with brands locally and globally, including my recent work with Troubadour Theatres in Wembley for ‘Starlight Express.’
3. How did you get into this?
It was a fortunate twist of fate. In school, my creative spark didn’t quite fit the mould. But during a management shadowing course at Ladies’ College, I shadowed a graphic designer at Joys Productions Services. This experience opened my eyes to a career path where my creativity could flourish. I pursued a degree in Graphic Communications with
Typography at Plymouth University and embarked on my design journey.
4. What’s the ‘why’ behind the work you?
Curiosity and a passion for beauty drive me. Design isn’t just a profession—it’s a continual quest for growth, a realm where curiosity is key. I relish problem-solving, turning client challenges into beautiful solutions. Seeing my designs resonate with people, knowing I’ve crafted a powerful, positive impact—that’s the ultimate reward.
5. What’s your process for coming up with your solutions/offers?
It all starts with a solid brief. I engage in deep consultations to truly understand the brand or project. Then it’s down to research and sketching concepts before even arriving at digital design, ensuring uniqueness through rigorous concept checking. Psychology is crucial, employing colour theory, typography, and layout to create impactful designs with versatility and adaptability for print and screen.
Inspiration can be a tricky mistress and it can come from anywhere: architecture, art, culture – so you have to absorb everything you see. Great design is not just a nice graphic, it’s about communication, so it’s a balance between psychology, function, craft and creativity.
6. What book has shaped your life and why?
While no single book has defined my life, ‘A Type Primer’ by John Cane was pivotal in my early design days, teaching the profound impact of typography. As a designer, understanding type psychology offers a competitive edge. Personally, I adore ‘Sabriel’ by Garth Nix; fantasy books ignite my imagination and inspire my world-building creativity.
7. Tea, Coffee or something a little stronger?
I’m love coffee (decaf these days) After hours, I’m partial to a cheeky rum…especially in a fabulous cocktail. Cheers to creativity!
