Every month we pose 7 questions to a Chamber member: this time it’s Cynthia Munemo of BDO

1. Who are you & what do you?

I’m Cynthia, a seasoned risk and controls advisory expert and Chartered Accountant with a knack for transforming complex risk and control concepts into actionable strategies.  I am also a mother of 3 amazing children and an avid ultra distance runner.

2. How long have you been doing what you do?

I’ve accumulated nearly two decades of experience in the industry,  starting as a bank teller and later qualifying as a Chartered Accountant within the Internal Audit, Risk, and Compliance department of a Big Four firm.  In that role I gained comprehensive expertise in accounting, as well as internal and external audit. After qualifying, I briefly worked in accounting but quickly realised my skills and interests were better suited to internal audit, risk, and controls.

3. How did you get into this?

Interestingly, my mum was also an internal auditor, so I was exposed to it early on. At first, I came into the field by chance, but eventually, I chose it as my career path. My attention to detail, analytical mindset, curiosity and drive to continually learn and find solutions have stood me in good stead.

4. What’s the ‘why’ behind the work you?

I’m motivated by doing work that has a tangible impact. As an internal auditor, I feel I’m able to contribute to the greater good. By helping businesses thrive, we indirectly support the economy, which benefits the wider community. Adding value to companies is my way of helping people.

Additionally, the challenge of identifying and mitigating risks enables me to use my analytical skills to protect and enhance organisational value for the clients we serve.

5. What’s your process for coming up with your solutions/offers?

My process starts with listening to the client’s needs and then creating tailored solutions. We believe in talking WITH not to our clients.

Lately, we’ve been focusing on anti-fragility, using a ‘sight’ model—hindsight (learning from past experiences), insight (understanding current processes by stepping into the client’s shoes), and foresight (projecting future outcomes).

In today’s world of constant crises—what some call a ‘permacrisis’—businesses need to adapt, and this model helps us provide comprehensive assurance and advisory services that not only address past and present issues but also prepare organisations for future challenges.

6. What book has shaped your life and why?

I have one that is currently shaping my life. Beyond Impossible: From Reluctant Runner to Guinness World Record Breaker by Mimi Anderson. It is a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and pushing beyond perceived limits.

Her story inspires me to tackle challenges head on, whether it’s enduring the physical and mental demands of long distance running or navigating the complexities of internal audits.

I strive to bring the same level of dedication and foresight to my professional role, ensuring I add tangible value and drive positive change within organisations. Mimi’s story encourages me to be a role model for my children, a supportive sibling, a reliable colleague, a caring friend and an engaged member of my community, always striving to inspire and uplift those around me. Always striving to be UNFORGETTABLE!

7. Tea, Coffee or something a little stronger?

I’ll take a pack of Lucozade over a hot drink any day!
