At the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce, our policy priorities are People and Planet. So, it’s inspiring to see local businesses like PF+A taking real, practical steps to support both – showing that positive change doesn’t have to be perfect or expensive, just proactive.
PF+A Director Alex Whitmore recently shared how the firm is encouraging sustainable travel through its long-running Green Token Scheme. For over 10 years, the initiative has rewarded team members who cycle, walk, car share, or take the bus to work. Each green token earned is worth £1, redeemed at the end of the year. “It’s not mega money,” says Alex, “but it’s a small incentive – and it’s really about awareness.” Today, more than half the PF+A team cycle or walk regularly.
The scheme is part of a broader culture shift: PF+A recognises that small, consistent changes in behaviour can have wide-reaching impacts – from individual health and wellbeing to reducing emissions and congestion across our island.
To support active travel further, the firm offers practical solutions like “Keith”, their orange, quirky, second-hand electric van (aka the company pool car), and a set of electric pool bikes – giving staff the confidence to leave the car at home without losing flexibility.
As Alex notes,
“Wouldn’t it be great if more and more people walked, rode or car shared? I think it would lead to a happier, healthier community.”
We agree – and we’d love to hear from other members about initiatives you’ve introduced to support people and planet. PF+A’s approach is proof that every effort counts. It doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to start.
