The UK has set a goal of installing heat pumps in half of all homes by 2040, and Guernsey needs to align with this initiative to meet its 2050 net zero target. Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are already gaining traction locally, with approximately one in twenty homes being heated by one.
ASHPs significantly reduce household carbon emissions – by 86% compared to gas and 90% compared to oil. As Guernsey transitions to cleaner energy sources, ASHPs can run on 100% renewable electricity, making them a smart choice for long-term sustainability.
The Government of Jersey is already incentivising low-carbon heating on our sister island, creating a match-funding grant for those with a fossil fuel heating system who want to change to a low-carbon alternative.
While offering grants to encourage the switch may be more realistic for larger governments, such as the UK, France, and Germany, Guernsey could help property owners make the transition now with alternative solutions such as interest-free lending schemes or match funding like Jersey.
“With energy prices continuing to rise, switching to air source heat pumps is one of the most effective ways for homeowners to cut costs while contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future,”
said Jamie Clark, Technical Director at Little Green.
“We’d like to see the next Assembly bring in more affordable financing options for homeowners to transition to more efficient energy sources.”
Aside from the sustainability benefits, a key advantage of ASHPs is their cost efficiency. Unlike traditional heating systems that rely on expensive fossil fuels, ASHPs operate at 300% efficiency – for every £1 spent on electricity, homeowners receive £3 worth of heat. This makes them highly attractive alternative for property owners looking to cut energy bills.
