By Natalia Silvester, entrepreneur and restaurateur
As an entrepreneur and restaurateur in Guernsey, I have always been passionate about food and the connections it creates.
Exploring New Opportunities Through Trade
I recently attended a webinar facilitated by the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce and hosted by Chris Morris, Head of International Trade for the States of Guernsey, Xavier Haurez, Managing Director of Morvan Fils Transit St Malo, and Steve Champion-Smith, Executive Freight Director at Condor Ferries.
The discussion focused on strengthening freight links between Guernsey and France—an incredibly insightful session that aligns directly with my plans for expanding Crepe Maison and introducing a French delicatessen at the forefront.
The conversation gave me a clearer understanding of how improved transport links could support my vision of sourcing exceptional French artisanal ingredients while also creating opportunities to showcase Guernsey’s own produce on an international stage.
Bringing the French Market Experience to Guernsey
Guernsey has so much untapped potential, and my goal is to recreate the essence of a traditional French market here on island—offering high-quality products from both France and local Guernsey producers. The webinar confirmed that expanded ferry services and improved freight logistics will enable me to import fresh ingredients directly from small-scale French producers, ensuring authenticity and quality. It also opens doors for exporting Guernsey-made goods to France, giving our local producers greater reach.
Guernsey has long supported ties with French food markets, with the Normandy market once a regular fixture in the summer calendar.
I want to build a vibrant space in Guernsey that’s more than just a place to shop and taste—it will be a cultural hub.
A place where people can learn about the origins of their food, from French cheeses and charcuterie to Guernsey dairy and seafood. Seasonal produce, traditional recipes, and even cookery demonstrations will bring both French and local food traditions to life.
Turning Insight Into Action
Thanks to the insights from the webinar, I now have a refined understanding of the logistics needed to bring this idea to life. I feel encouraged—and more than that, motivated. The improved ferry schedule and freight services provide the infrastructure I need to source the freshest ingredients from France and explore new ways to distribute Guernsey products abroad.
With these insights in hand, I’m laying the groundwork for my new venture—and I believe it can be launched within three months. This project is about creating a sustainable, culturally enriching space that celebrates both French and Guernsey food traditions, while supporting small, local producers.
Discussions like the one I attended are essential for moving ideas forward. My vision for Guernsey’s food industry is rooted in growth, sustainability, and international exchange—and I’m excited to be part of that future.
With the right support, I believe this initiative will not only succeed but spark further innovation across Guernsey’s business community.
