AI‑driven search is reshaping how organisations are discovered, evaluated and trusted, and the shift is happening faster than most realise.

For Guernsey’s business community, this moment represents both a challenge and a significant opportunity. As highlighted in a recent webinar hosted by Orchard and Indulge, AI is not simply changing the mechanics of search, it is redefining what visibility means in a digital landscape where reputation, credibility and clarity matter more than ever.
AI is changing how customers find and judge businesses
Traditional search engines return a list of links. AI‑powered search tools do something very different: they interpret, summarise and recommend. They draw on a wide ecosystem of signals from media coverage and expert commentary to website clarity and brand consistency, in order to decide which organisations they trust enough to surface in their answers.
This shift places new emphasis on the quality of a business’s digital footprint. AI systems reward brands that communicate clearly, appear in credible third‑party sources and maintain a consistent, authoritative presence online. In other words, the foundations of strong PR have become the foundations of AI visibility.
Yet many organisations are still catching up. During the webinar, only 35% of attendees said they were actively reviewing or updating their content for an AI‑driven landscape, while 55% admitted they were still in the learning phase. For a business community as dynamic as Guernsey’s, this gap represents a real risk and a real opportunity for those who act early.
Why PR matters more than ever
AI trust is built through the core principles of PR: earned media, expert commentary, fact‑rich storytelling and consistent messaging. As Brooke Kenyon, Orchard’s MD of Strategy and Growth, explained during the session, “brands that invest in PR now will be the ones AI recognises, elevates and amplifies”.
This is because AI systems look for signals that demonstrate authority and reliability. A business with strong media coverage, clear messaging and visible expertise is far more likely to be surfaced in AI‑generated answers than one with a sparse or inconsistent digital presence. PR has always shaped reputation; now it shapes discoverability too.
What Guernsey businesses should do to be AI‑ready
The transition to AI‑driven search does not require a complete overhaul, but it does require intentional action. The following steps emerged as the most important for organisations wanting to future‑proof their visibility:
- Audit your digital reputation. AI tools scan the entire digital ecosystem, not just your website. Businesses should review their media coverage, online mentions, leadership visibility and any outdated or inconsistent content
- Strengthen your PR foundations. Build credibility through leadership, case studies, commentary and consistent messaging across all channels. These elements help AI understand who you are and why you matter.
- Refresh your website and on‑site content. AI‑driven search engines prioritise content that is clear, structured, authoritative and up to date. Businesses should review their website through the lens of: would an AI system trust this? That means removing outdated information, improving clarity and ensuring key messages are easy to interpret.
- Develop a GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) strategy. GEO is the emerging discipline of optimising for AI‑powered search. It includes ensuring your brand is well‑represented in trusted external sources, creating content that answers real questions clearly and aligning PR, SEO and content strategies.
AI is not just a technological shift; it is a visibility shift. For Guernsey businesses, this is a chance to stand out beyond the island, strengthen trust with customers and stakeholders, and compete more effectively in global markets. The organisations that act now will be the ones AI elevates tomorrow.
