Guernsey Electricity has created an annual fund for individuals and organisations wishing to engage in projects that benefit the environment and local community.
The newly set-up ‘Power to the People Fund’ offers grants to groups across the Bailiwick and is aimed at environmental initiatives that are aligned with the four pillars of the company’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy which, in turn, contribute towards the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Sally-Ann David, Guernsey Electricity’s chief operating officer, confirmed the fund is intended to appeal to local organisations or individuals that embrace environmental sustainability.
“Supporting these initiatives and causes is a key part of what we stand for. We recognise that many Islanders are in tune with our own aspirations for tackling climate change, encouraging sustainable energy use, supporting healthy ecosystems and educating the community and we want to further the positive steps we are taking within our business operations by broadening our efforts to our community.”
“Whilst previous activities have focused on youth and community, this new direction provides for a range of projects and delivers measurable benefits for achieving sustainable development. We look forward to supporting the work of successful applicants in making a real difference, not just now but into the future.”
The fund launches on Thursday 05 November and is open to community groups, charities, social enterprises, cooperatives, schools, individuals, and amateur sports clubs from across the Bailiwick.
The process comprises an online submission via the company’s website, followed by an assessment of the suitability of each application based on set criteria. Successful applicants will be notified by 31 March 2021 and funds are allocated twice per year, £6,000 in March and a similar amount in September.
Mrs David confirmed that charities and partners previously supported by Guernsey Electricity will also be able to apply for funding provided they align with the four pillars.
