Can you volunteer your time to support the Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden?

We are a group of volunteers who came together in 2006 under the leadership of businessman Raymond Evison, of the Guernsey Clematis Nursery, to transform a derelict site and bring it back to life as a thriving and productive garden. Guided by historical research to design the gardens, a total of 170 feet of glasshouses have now been restored. Today, more than 350 heritage plants from the Victorian period (1837-1901) are grown in the gardens.
The aim of our Charity, which is run entirely by volunteers, is to uphold and preserve Guernsey’s horticultural history and heritage. We also educate people of all ages and abilities about the benefits of gardening to help promote and support the physical and mental wellbeing of our island community.
In 2025, the volunteers achieved their dream of opening an Education & Heritage Centre – The Gatehouse – having raised funds with the help of the local community. This building will enhance our education programmes in all sectors and facilitate horticultural and other workshops, as well as provide a space for exhibitions and meetings.
Many islanders are yet to discover the Garden, but those who have are taken aback by the peaceful and beautiful surroundings. Some, we are pleased to say, join us as volunteers.
You don’t have to be a gardener to join us, but you can certainly come along and learn about gardening or help us with other activities. From general maintenance, to helping with social media, the running of our retail outlet, La Choppe for a morning or afternoon, or supporting with events which raise vital funds for the Garden. There really is something for everyone to participate in and ultimately support the charity.
We also welcome support from businesses through their Corporate Social Responsibility programmes. Teams can spend half a day or a full day in the garden helping us with a number of tasks, from attending beds, through to planting vegetables, cutting back foliage, and pruning. If your company is interested in giving back something to the community, please do come and spend some time with us.
