Here is a selection of feedback we have received from attendees at our events (page 2):

Richard SheldonAppleby (Chamber Business Focus)
“I thought the sessions were very useful and a good opportunity for businesses to share thoughts.  The main issue we discussed was the continuing problem that businesses have in recruiting and then retaining high quality staff.  If Guernsey wants to remain competitive it needs to tackle the issue of housing licences head on, by ensuring there are protections in place for local people which also manage the population, whilst at the same time be more welcoming to companies who want to relocate senior staff on the island to establish new businesses here.  Even when a company can obtain a licence, the prospect of it not being renewed after 5 years means we are continually losing some of the best imported talent on the island.  Many of these people end up in Jersey, taking the work that would otherwise have come to Guernsey with them.”

Glyn Smith Insurance Corporation (January Chamber Lunch with Patrick Rice)
“I think Patrick’s thoughts on cyber crime and how we can all be affected locally, with some pointers about what we should beware of and where to go to for help, were very relevant.”

Michele Butters – Profile Event Management (December Chamber Lunch with The National Trust of Guernsey)
“Thank you for a very enjoyable and informative lunch. This was my first Chamber lunch and not only was it lovely to meet new people and make new friends but the subject was also close to my heart (having been a National Trust Member in the UK for years and a past member of the UK Vernacular Architectural Society) and beautifully presented by Martin. OGH provided a splendid Christmas dinner and thank you to all of the staff. I’m looking forward to the next one.”

Carl Stanford – BWCI (Chamber Annual Dinner)
“I really enjoyed Chamber’s Annual Dinner. Richard Eyre and the video were excellent, as was President Tony Rowbotham’s speech. An event that will be hard to top so well done to all. I was also pleased to see Martin Dorey win the Anvil Award for his hard work on demographics.”

Nic Legg – Coast Media (November Chamber Lunch with Jonathan Le Tocq)
“It was great to see so many people in attendance at OGH for what proved to be an interesting and potentially controversial address from our Chief Minister. On my table were a good mix of industry professionals, who were happy to share their views, and the discussion in the room certainly continued into the streets of St Peter Port and beyond.”

Pierre BlampiedSPF Private Clients (November Chamber Lunch with Jonathan Le Tocq)
“The lunch seminar was very well attended and I was pleased to learn that we can hopefully reduce the number of deputies during this current assembly.”

Jason Connolly  Next Generation IT (October 2014 Chamber lunch with Julian Box)
“Data residency represents a great opportunity for Guernsey. With the exponential growth of data worldwide, Guernsey must exploit its strengths of proximity to Europe and its favourable business environment to build competitive advantage and capture a proportion of this growing marketplace. The Digital Guernsey initiative can build on the success of the finance industry to provide specific areas of global expertise in a well regulated and connected offshore jurisdiction.”

Tracey O’Neill – The Old Government House Hotel and Spa (VisitGuernsey Tourism Seminar)
“The update was very helpful for us as the campaign outlined by Mike Hopkins from Visit Guernsey affects our strategy for 2015 which, with the 70th anniversary of Liberation, will be such an important year for the islands. The presentations from the service providers were very well received and the seminar was also a good opportunity for us to talk to our friends from across the hospitality sector.”

Peter Van de Velde  Rock Commercial (September 2014 Chamber lunch with David Kingdom)
“I found David Kingdom’s talk very thought provoking, for me the most worrying factor was the Deputies and Civil servants approach to accepting projects that would grow Guernsey’s economy, they all need to start working together and get the message out that Guernsey is open for business rather than pushing businesses away.”

Richard Lowe  Smart Office (September 2014 Chamber lunch with David Kingdom)
“As a new member I was very impressed with the welcome extended to me and the thought provoking speaker. David Kingdom is clearly highly regarded in his field and had some fascinating views. I look forward to attending future events.”

Kathy Tracey  The Learning Company
“Chamber lunches provide me with an opportunity to see people that I wouldn’t catch up with on a regular basis. It provides a good touchstone for what’s happening in the business community and allows me to network with local business people.”

Peter Daley – Individual Member (Guernsey Electricity Power Station Tour, July 2014)
“Fascinating visit on a vital service commodity.”

Sheila Innes – Individual Member (July 2014 Chamber lunch with Dr. Harvey Marshall)
“I thought Dr. Harvey Marshall was fascinating and we could do with him as first minister. Always to the point. I could have listened to him for hours! Brilliant man!”

Tim Rawles – Tiara Software Consultants Ltd (July 2014 Chamber lunch with Dr. Harvey Marshall)
“Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the food at lunchtime today. Please pass on my thanks. Enjoyed the speaker too.”

Jane Tullier – Personal Trainer / Nordic Walking Instructor (Victorian Walled Garden Visit, June 2014)
“I was pleased to have been invited to this event and accepted eagerly particularly as Raymond Evison was conducting the tour. On the day I found the volunteers to be so enthusiastic and informative. I had not seen the garden for a few years so found the transformation amazing. The attention to (Victorian) detail was impressive and the future plans are to be admired. I found the time of day perfect for my schedule and the addition of breakfast, using only local produce, plus a further talk by Raymond, to be the perfect ending.”

Richard Lord – Sustainable Guernsey ( breakfast seminar, June 2014)
“Galaxy Computer did an excellent job of presenting their WEEE compliant digital data destruction service and their new cloud-based on-island service to an interested audience. The company brought their lorry to the seminar venue to show their hard disk and tape crushers in action.”
