At this year’s Gala Dinner, Chamber Executive Director Alice Gill encouraged members to support the the charity partner Guernsey Community Savings (GCS) with their time, expertise, and resources.
GCS is an exceptional local charity championing financial inclusion by helping people who are unable to open or maintain a bank account. Whether due to account closures, poor credit history, or missing documentation, GCS ensures that islanders in need can access essential banking services and gain the financial education required to manage their money confidently.
Since opening in September 2020, GCS has provided life-changing support to more than 200 islanders who were previously excluded from everyday life simply because they didn’t have a bank account. Without one, it becomes almost impossible to secure accommodation or employment, and as more retailers move away from cash, those without debit cards face barriers to purchasing even basic goods or services. Many also end up paying more for essentials like utilities because they cannot use direct debits.
Alice urged Chamber members to rally behind GCS’s mission:
“Financial exclusion affects real people in our community – people who want to work, live independently, and participate fully in island life. This partnership is a chance for our business community to make a tangible difference.”
Chamber is encouraging all members to get involved – by volunteering, offering professional skills, or providing financial support – to help ensure no one in Guernsey is left behind due to financial exclusion.
